Our CCGA History

Capital City Golf Association
- Established in the 1940s -
- Incorprated in 1978 -

Capital City Golf Association (CCGA) has been a thriving local golf association for African Americans since the early 1940's. It was formally incorporated in 1978 by Misters Marvin Douglas, Marion Curry, Lawrence Britton and Roland Hayes. The purpose of the organization is "to create, promote, and encourage enthusiasm for golf and fellowship among members of the association as well as harmony among all golfers and golfing associations". One of CCGA’s missions is to provide competitive opportunities for minorities and support junior golf in the central Texas area through training and scholarships. CCGA is also a member of the Texas State Amateur Golf Association (TSAGA) which was established in 1944. TSAGA exists for the purpose of promoting and developing fellowship with competitive amateur golfers throughout the State of Texas. CCGA was one of the early pioneer organizations to help form TSAGA. CCGA has had the pleasure of hosting many TSAGA events. Most recently, in July of 2004, CCGA hosted the 61st Annual TSAGA State Championships. Over 90 golfers, male and female, and their families came to Austin from all over Texas for three days of competition and fellowship.

A Letter from the President

Capital City Golf AssociationP.O. Box 6051Austin, Texas 78762-6051

Dear CCGA Members:

Happy New Year!  Let me begin by saying that 2008 promises to be a more productive and exciting time for the Capital City Golf Association.  2007 presented a number of challenges and let me be frank and say that, while I accepted the invitation to be the organization’s president, I truly did not have the time to do what the position requires.  Things have changed and I am ready to give the organization the time and energy it deserves to make it a success.

We held our first membership meeting on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at Huston-Tillotson University.  As you will note from the attached meeting minutes, we accomplished a great deal and put together a plan to have a full-year of golf and support the goals and objectives of the organization as outlined in our bylaws.

I am writing asking that you pay your 2008 membership dues in the amount of $50.00 by February 15th.  Please make your check out to Capital City Golf Association and mail it to P.O. Box 6051; Austin, Texas 78762-6051.  As you will note from the membership meeting minutes, a portion of your dues will go toward establishing a handicap for each member through Morris Williams Golf Course.

Establishing an official USGA handicap for each member is going to allow us to have a more equitable system for flighting our tournaments since each member will be able to post all of his or her scores by either turning in their cards at Morris Williams or simply going online and posting their score via the GHIN system.  The GHIN system will allow you to post a score wherever you play a round via the web.

Again, this is going to be an exciting year and we hope to see you on the links hitting them long and straight soon.

Sincerely,

Terry A. Wilson

President

.

President Terry Wilson

Membership Meeting Notes

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Dickey-Lawless Auditorium Rm#200

Huston-Tillotson University

Members Present:  Terry Wilson, President; Floyd Chambers, Vice President; Hershall Shelley, Treasurer.

Meeting was called to order at 6:15 p.m.

I.          Treasurers Report:  Hershall Shelley submitted the organization’s financial report showing the organization with a bank balance of $1,743.35 as of  12/31/2007.

Shelley indicated that the bank was about the return the organization’s funds because of lack of activity on the account.  He obtained signature authorization for the account and a motion was made and accepted that Terry Wilson in his capacity as president be added to the account as well.  This is in        accordance with the organization’s bylaws.  Mr. Wilson and Dr. Shelley will formalize this at the bank the week of January 21, 2008.

The Treasurer’s report was approved and accepted.

II.        CCGA Bylaws:  Floyd Chambers presented CCGA’s bylaws that were last updated by Judge Sam Biscoe in March of 2007.  Copies were presented and will be permanently filed among the organization’s important documents files.  It was mentioned that we need to follow up with Judge Biscoe to obtain      the signed copy of the document and that the document be updated to reflect the new officers of the organization.

III.       Dues:  A motion was made and approved to set the organization’s annual dues at $50.00 which are due by February 15th.  A portion of the dues will go toward establishing an official USGA handicap for each member at Morris Williams Golf Course.  The handicap will be accessible through the GHIN             online system and will allow each member to post scores wherever he or she plays a round of golf.  The member can either turn the card in at Morris Williams or go online and post the score.

This is going to allow for a more equitable tournament system and make it easier to organize the organization’s tournaments as our members will be appropriately flighted based on his or her correct USGA approved handicap.

Dues were collected from Terry Wilson, Floyd Chambers and Hershall Shelley.

III.       CCGA Property:  It was noted that CCGA has coolers, trophies and memorabilia that belongs to the organization and is in the hands of former officers and members.  The organization’s championship plaque was specifically mentioned which Kirk Johnson, the immediate past president has.

Terry Wilson indicated he would follow up with Kirk Johnson and obtain the plaque that will be updated and hung for display at Morris Williams.  It was also mentioned that we need to obtain administrative access to the website so that it can be updated and the software Mr. Johnson was using to keep handicaps.

While the organization has software for keeping handicaps, it was noted that it is very time intensive to keep up with because someone must enter each round of golf posted for each member.  It was our observation that the only rounds of golf being posted via this system were CCGA organized tournaments, which would not truly reflect a members’ handicap.  All rounds of golf played must be posted to have an accurate handicap.  The new system mentioned above will allow us to accomplish this without the burden of having to input any data.

IV.       2008 Tournament Schedule:  The organization does not have an official tournament director at this time; however, Floyd Chambers agreed to serve in that capacity for the 2008 tournament season.

A motion was made an approved to have one tournament each month beginning in March and ending in September.  The inner-city tournament is tentatively scheduled for May.  Chambers will put a detailed schedule together and members will be provided with that information at our next meeting.

Message from Vice President Floyd Chambers

The message from Floyd Chambers, the Vice President, is simple and short.  I may give you a few strokes per 18 holes. Just come out and play with us!
